A Study on the Association of Dentists in Japan¢¥s Colonial Policy

Abstract
In October the 2nd, 1921, Korea-based Japanese dentists established the Association of Chosun Dentists. This organization Was meant to get administrational aid because they didn¢¥t have smooth relation with yipcheesa(denturist or dental craftman). It was.
a
public corporation and its aim was to contribute to the national hygiene administrative affairs rather than to any individuals interest. Its members were joined privately, but it was transformed into the Combined Association of Chosun Dentist,; the assembly of all the associations of dentists.
The imperialist Japan started the Provincial Association of Dentists by the name of ¢¥the state of affairs¢¥ . Its aim was to manage sub-organizations, distribute stuff for dental treatment, and advocate and improve the right of practicing dentistry. Also, its eventual aim was the establishment of the legal association of dentists. Its rights were limited and its responsibility was enlarged, so it had the proper system for a colony.
The Hansung Association of Dentists established in 1925 was the organization made by the necessity of the association for Koreans only. In 1928, as its member increased, it made several departments and system for holding conferences and took several actions for academic research, campaign for oral hygiene and welfare of its members. In September 25th, 1925, the Hansung Association of Dentists joined the Combined Association of Chosun Dentists as the organization representing Korean dentists. In October the 1st, 1942, the Hansung Association of Dentists joined forcefully to the Association of Kyungsung Dentists in the name of Naesunilche¢¥ --Japan and Korea are one--Korean dentists couldn¢¥t do any collective actions.
Activities for oral hygiene were done mainly by the event of ¢¥decayed tooth preventive day¢¥. From 1928 to 1936 this event was hosted by the association of dentists and sponsored by the government and toothpaste companies. The Association of Chosun Dentists planned this event and the Provincial Association of Dentists carried it out. In June 22nd, 1932, the School Dental Clinic
by the school dentist policy was established and the Association of Chosun Dentists aided the development of School Dental i Clinic. From 1937 to 1943 on, the event was influenced more strongly by the government and toothpaste companies than the Association of Chosun Dentists. During this period, activities for oral hygiene were done to the cooperation with `the General
Mobilization movement of National Spirit¢¥ under the influence of ¢¥the state of affairs¢¥ . One of the striking things in this period j was the application of military drill to tooth brushing.
The regulation for the use of gold limited dental treatment. In the late 1939, tightening of the regulation led to searching for the I
substitute. When a substitute alloy was developed, the Association of Chosun Dentists along with the Chosun Dental Science i
Academy and the Kyungsung Dental Science Academy encouraged dentists to use the unproven product in Korea. In 1941, the j Government-General of Korea set official selling price and the Chosun Union of Stuff for Dental Treatment distributed materials but the shortage of them caused difficulty in dental treatment.
